about

I called this collection of songs Twenty for a few reasons. Most obviously, there are 20 tracks here. There’s also the year in which it was made – this recording consumed the last half of my 2020, while still self-isolating and social distancing due to COVID-19. And if you go back to 1990, when I first started putting my name on home recordings of music, this is the twentieth project I have done.

It’s another homemade affair, completed with the same tools I had last time: GarageBand, a piano (tuned this time), a guitar I cannot play, kitchen utensils as percussion instruments and a cheap microphone. I borrowed an ebow from Jeff Elbel for this, and a funny plastic recorder I picked up online in a moment of whimsy makes an appearance as well. (For the record, I cannot play the recorder either.) There are no words, but there are lots and lots of vocals.

The last thing I did (A Dream of Outside) was a pandemic lockdown diary, all about isolation and yearning. This one is about finding hope amidst the chaos. So there are moments of bedlam, but lots of optimism and joy here too. This time I tried my best to use all the meager resources I had to their limits. There’s a lot of stepping outside the comfort zone here – did I mention I cannot play guitar, and that guitar features on nearly every song? – which, I think, mirrors a lot of our experiences over the past year. Separated from our communities and support systems, we’ve had to learn to use what we have and create something new.

I am indebted to Jeff Elbel for the ebow, to Jason DeLancey for the beautiful cover photo, to Kevin Trudo and Chad Watson and Steve Warrenfeltz for their support, and to Tim and Jennie Waldorf, Liz Copeland, Anna Hammond, Andrew Watson and Kevin Cafferty for suggesting song titles. And to you, of course, for listening.
