A Dream of Outside is a strange collection, so of course it has a strange origin story.

It began with the two extended piano pieces. I’d been thinking for years about recording piano improvisations, partially because several people have asked for them. The concept I eventually landed on was to field-record pieces on significant pianos, ones that have meant something to my musical life. In December 2019 I recorded “Homecoming” on my mother’s upright piano at her home in Massachusetts. In February I recorded “Symmetry” on the grand piano at Fermilab, during my last week working there.

And then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The plans I had to capture other piano rambles on location were put on hold while we all sheltered in place. I started thinking about other music I could make at home, with nothing but GarageBand and an out-of-tune upright. It became an interesting challenge, to capture the feeling of being housebound and upending our lives, helpless to stop the virus raging outside.

What I ended up with is seven strange pieces that feel right to me, that capture what living through this pandemic has been like. The five “Quarantine” pieces are moods. All the sound effects and atmospheres were captured from the doors of my house, looking out at freedom. I don’t play guitar, but guitar shows up on three tracks here, most obviously raging against the found-percussion nightmare of “Quarantine Day 51.” “Months Like Years” is a vocal sculpture, and the title track a journey in its own right (with more guitar).

In context now, the two longer piano pieces feel like memories of better times. I think it all works together to tell the story of my 2020 so far. A Dream of Outside is my first new music in 19 years, and I did not expect it to be accompanied by such terrible and wide-reaching circumstances. I hope the feelings it evokes will one day soon seem like a bitter memory.
